The first case study is an ethical issue, which falls under dilemma of autonomy. According to Smith, â€Å"†¦dilemma of autonomy occurs when individuals other than the patient must determine, or attempt to determine, what’s best for the patient† (2005, p. 75). Nursing ethics demands that the patient act autonomously in making informed choices about medication or other health related issues. In this situation, the patient had the right to deny further chemotherapy; may be because the medications were not effective or the patient had lost hope of recovering. At least, these were indications of the patient’s dissatisfaction with chemotherapy and it was ethically right for the boy to decline any further chemotherapy administration. In contrast to the patient’s interest, the physician, the nurse and the parents acted in beneficence. The film is set it the late 1960s, during the Civil Rights Act, where the southern community of America were unwilling to change their lifestyle and include black citizens into the society. This lead to economical and social oppression, whereby poverty in the south increased and a rise in violence and crime, meant that it was a dangerous place to live, especially for black citizens. The film contains many symbols and underlying meanings which the average audience would not understand. The opening sequence of any film, clearly establishes the mood and setting of the film. It needs to be interesting and powerful in order to captivate the attention of the audience. In Mississippi Burning, the opening scene establishes the mood as being one of anger and hatred. There is an establishing shot of a dull and dilapidated washroom, with two sinks, one of better quality than the other. Symbolically, the vertical drain pipe acts like a division between the two sinks and the two races. A white man enters the shot and uses the sophisticated wash basin, whilst a young black boy washes his hands in the unclean sink. This immediately informs the audience about what the film is going to be about. Also some of the audience, who did not experience segregation, get an insight into what life was like during this period of time. Alan Parker uses lighting to great significance. The opening shot is dull and unlit, and significantly the light through the window, shines on the sink, which is used by the white citizens. This has an unconscious impact on the audience, and they realise that the white citizens are being favoured in this town. However what the director is also trying to portray, is the fact that the economic recession has had an impact on the whole society. The black people are only slightly poorer than the white people, because the two societies are using the same dilapidated washroom. This tells us that the whole community is not as socially or economically advanced as the northern areas of America. The background music is also symbolic. The soundtrack suggests that the film is of a serious nature, because it creates an atmosphere of grief by the using a lament Blues song, originated by black African-Americans, who were enslaved by white people and used this type of music to express their feelings. This further cements the racism link. The images of the next establishing shot, a burning church combines excellently with the music to make the scene very depressing and dull. The church has a moral message. It suggests that these people are against Christian values and suggests that this is a place of hell. The burning cross is an oblique reference to the Ku Klux Klan, a group of white people who terrified black and Jewish people. As the church finally collapses the camera zooms in making the experience more intense. Alan Parker then uses several camera techniques, which allows the audience to take in the symbolic information. The camera pans up and the flames die down, and there is a black background with white text saying Directed by Alan Parker. I think that the director combined these images of the washroom and burning church; to make the audience tense before the action unfolds. An important aspect of the opening sequence is the fact that there has been no dialogue so far, which sustains tensions and the silence during the opening scenes creates a menacing atmosphere. The whole screen then becomes black and the next establishing shot is a car in the black night, with two-thirds of the screen still black, representing the menacing night. The background music has stopped and we can hear the real sounds of the cars. We then get a close-up shot of the unknown faces in the car; we cant distinguish who they are at the moment, although it seems ironic in a sense that there are two white people and one black person in the same car. In the next shot the camera angle expands to show that the road is in the middle of nowhere and that there is nobody to stop an attack from happening. The camera then switches into the car where the lighting is very dark but the characters seem quite relaxed. It seems too calm, and I think the director is leading the audience into a false sense of security, because the mood of this scene doesnt seem to fit with the outline of the film. Then a drum beat starts, which symbolises the Death March, and adds to the narrative tension. It prepares the audience for the death of someone, possibly the foreigners in the car. The camera then changes to a long shot and the audience spots another anonymous car, following the first car. This second car, an iconic truck of the southern white American citizens, has its lights turned off because they want to remain ominous. The audience feel unsympathetic and sinister towards the mysterious people in the truck, because the viewers are unaware of who they are and what they look like. The director then increases narrative tension, by increasing the sound volume, as the truck approaches the saloon car. This also increases the narrative pace of the film and the audience know that they are about to witness something dramatic. Then all of a sudden, the tension is cut and a police siren starts to wail, and a side shot of the two cars shows that the truck behind is a police car. As the two men get out of the police car, the unsure audience are eager to find out if these men are really policemen, but the director uses lighting very cleverly to hide the identity of the two men, which adds mystery and suspense to the atmosphere of the scene. The viewers know that everything in the shade is underhand. The short scenes and good use of cutting allows there to be an increase in narrative tension and pace of the film. The scene seems somewhat interrogational, where the policeman shines a light on the faces of the people in the car. As soon as the man who got out of the car talks, his personality becomes apparent. His appearance makes him seem psychotic and menacing and he uses impolite and informal speech. He has a southern accent and comments on the smell of the person in the car, calling him a nigger loving Jew boy. The audience immediately dislike this vulgar, racist and aggressive character. In complete contrast, the northern citizen is polite and the director wants to portray him as a young, idealistic, civilised man. He refers to the police officer as Sir, after he realises that he is an aggressive man. The audience feel sympathetic towards the driver as he is polite, but also because he has feminine features. The black man in the back knows whats happening, and tells his friend not to look at the face of the southern man, but its too late and he shoots the driver. The audience hears three shots and assume that all three men in the car are dead. Although there are no images the sounds of the racist killers laughing about the atrocities that they had just committed, brings a sad and hateful mood to the opening sequence. Again, there is a pause of a couple of seconds, with just a black background, allowing the audience to reflect on the events that have just happened. There were some very strong images on show in the previous scenes which are vital for the rest of the movie. It prepares the audience for the rest of the film, and it gives them knowledge of the historical, social and economical context of the film.

Benefits of Police Body Cameras As with any new technology, police body-worn cameras are becoming the new trend in the law enforcement community. While camera and surveillance systems have been around for a quite a while, body-worn cameras have seen increase popularity as several high profile cases have brought this technology to the forefront. As agencies proceed forward with pilot programs to evaluate its usefulness, they must decide if the perceived benefits justify the cost and expense to implement such a program. From the general public perspective, the use of body worn cameras represents police accountability and transparency. By their use alone studies have shown they improve officer professionalism and behavior. As agencies implement body worn cameras, officers will be more aware of their actions and interactions with the general public and less likely to cross the line between use of force necessary to apprehend suspects and blatant over use of force. That same perspective is also true from the law enforcement community. Studies have shown from many different sources that when individuals are being recorded or that they are aware their actions are being recorded, their behavior will change. They are more aware of their behavior and will potentially alter their interactions with the person who is recording. â€Å"Accumulated evidence further suggests that individuals who are aware that they being-observed often embrace submissive or commonly-accepted behavior, particularly when the observer is a rule-enforcing entity.† (Self-Awareness to being watched and Socially-Desirable Behavior, 2013, p. 2). There are many times in an officer’s career when the person they arrest and the behavior they display on scene is quite the stark contrast when both meet in the courtroom for trial. The professionally dressed defendant who speaks intelligently is much different than the drunken patron that was involved in a fight and arrested for battery. Had camera footage been available, the impression would be quite different when presented to a judge. If the defendant was aware that he was being recorded, his behavior would most likely be different. â€Å"It can be incredibly frustrating to arrive in court to find a defendant dressed professionally in a suit with an angelic demeanor that’s completely opposite of the person who was arrested. Using cameras to capture that person’s true character and behavior can be very beneficial when it comes to prosecution.† (McFarlin, 2015, para. 4). Along with possible behavior modifications, other perceived benefits of body-worn cameras for agencies are reduced citizen complaints and officer use of force incidents. In 2012, the City of Rialto Police Department, in conjunction with the University of Cambridge (UK), conducted a yearlong study on the effects and impacts of police worn body cameras. Over the course of a year period, different patrol shifts were given cameras while others were not. The study was a random sample of different shifts at different times over the course of the study. After the yearlong pilot, the results were amazing. The groups that were assigned body cameras had a reduction of use-of-force incidents by 60% from the previous year. The study also concluded that citizen complaints for that same group were reduced by 88% over the previous year’s findings. The Rialto Police Chief stated,† Whether the reduced number of complaints was because of the officers behaving better or the citizens behavi ng better—well, it was probably a little bit of both.† (Police Executive Research Forum [PERF], 2014, p. 5). In another study on how body cameras reduce citizen complaints, the Mesa Police Department conducted a yearlong study specifically focusing on reducing complaints. The pilot program consisted of two groups; 50 patrol officers with assigned body cameras and 50 without body cameras. Both of the groups were similar in demographics and assigned patrol duties. The study, conducted in conjunction with the University of Arizona, concluded that the patrol officers without body cameras had three times more citizen complaints. In addition, the study also concluded that the patrol officers that had been wearing the body-worn cameras had a 40% reduction in citizen’s complaints and 75% reduction in use of force complaints from the previous year in which the body cameras were not used. In both studies, the overwhelming results state that body-worn cameras reduced citizen complaints. This is due in part to behavior on both sides from the awareness of having the incident being recorded. Greensboro’s Police Chief Ken Miller states, â€Å"We actually encourage our officers to let people know that they are recording. â€Å"Why? Because we think that it elevates behavior on both sides of the camera.† (PERF, 2014, p. 6). Video footage from officer’s using the body-worn cameras can also be used to correct internal agency problems and well as a useful training tool. In a recent survey from Police Chiefs around the country on the use of body camera video, 94% of the respondents stated that they use it as a training tool or for review by administrators to correct officer behavior. (PERF, 2014, p. 7). Body camera video has a multitude of training examples. While reviewing footage, administrators can evaluate current policies and determine if revisions need to be made based on actual officer encounters. The training department can create very specific scenarios to train their officers based on actual calls in the field. Additionally, officer training can now be specific to the individual agency or internal department. Perhaps one of the biggest benefits to law enforcement will be capturing and documenting evidence for criminal investigations. Again, it’s just another tool that can aid in the successful prosecution of criminals. When officers respond to a major crime scene, most of their focus and first priority is securing the scene and aiding victims with first aid measures. As they start their interviews and try to put together what happened, it is difficult to remember all the details. By using a body-worn camera, the officer is able to capture the scene and many of the small details that would have been missed. As they are walking around the crime scene, they are actually recorded it as it was upon initial response. This tool can provide a wealth of information to detectives that usually arrive well after the fact when it is calm and not hurried. Police Chief Parker of Dalton, Georgia states, â€Å"Unlike in-car cameras, body-worn cameras capture everything that happens as officersâ₠¬â„¢ travel around the scene and interview multiple people. The body-worn cameras have been incredibly useful in accurately preserving information.† (PERF, 2014, p. 9). Local prosecutors are also encouraged and actively engaging agencies to adopt this technology. Having a video record to present in court is usually hard to defend. In Kentucky, a local defense attorney commented on the use of providing body-worn camera video. â€Å"It makes it much easier for them to understand a guilty plea is probably going to be in their best interest, because you dont want a jury to see this†. (Mateescu, Rosenblat, Boyd, 2015, p. 27). This is particularly true for domestic violence case when the video evidence is provided in court. Many times, especially if there is a pattern of abuse and the victims are afraid, they do not want to press charges. Gathering evidence is difficult at best. Coupled with uncooperative victims and prosecution is almost nearly impossible. By providing prosecutors with video evidence upon arriving on scene, it will capture the demeanor of the victims and suspects as well as any injuries sustained. Providing this information to pr osecutors, they can build a case even if the victim refuses to press charges or declines to provide a statement. Research Synthesis Paper According to American Academy of Pediatrics, â€Å"It is estimated that approximately 15 million people in the United States suffer from Asthma. Asthma is the most common chronic illness in children† ( Schlienger 2004). Although inhaled steroids have been established as the preventive treatment of choice, few studies have been conducted to assess the risks of inhaled steroid therapy. Inhaled corticosteroids are absorbed into the systemic circulation, but the extent to which they have adverse effects on bone density and growth is uncertain. The question is important since according to AAOP, â€Å"10% of the American population take an inhaled corticosteroid regularly and may do so for many years† (2005). In the present paper the role that inhaled corticosteriod steroids have on growth and bone density of children is investigated.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Current guidelines recommend the use of inhaled corticosteroids for children and adolescents with mild persistent or more severe forms of asthma claiming they are safer then oral steroids. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, â€Å"Inhalation targets corticosteroids directly to the site of airway inflammation with fewer adverse effects compared with oral administration. However, a considerable portion of an inhaled steroid dose is deposited in the oropharynx and subsequently swallowed and absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Some fraction will be bioavailable to the systemic circulation, thereby potentially increasing the risk of adverse systemic corticosteroid effects† (Napoli, 2001). In the Healthy People 2010 report, the goal concerning respiratory diseases is to â€Å"promote respiratory health through better prevention, detection, treatment, and education†. Effective health management strategies for meeting this goal include: â€Å"controlling factors that trigger asthma, such as upper-respiratory infections, allergens, food or drug allergies, emotional upset, irritants, and exercise; use pharmacologic intervention tailored to the severity of the disease; provide objective monitoring of lung function; and educate patients with asthma to become active participants in their own care† (HP, 2000). This relates to this topic because education is very important in caring for a patient with asthma. The patient should be taught how to use the corticosteriods and possible side effects that can occur. It is also important to teach patients how to reduce the incidence of asthma so the use of corticosteriods might not be needed.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Through my research I learned that studies investigating the association between inhaled corticosteroid use and bone-mineral density in adults have given inconsistent results. These studies have been small, the duration of treatment has been short, and most have been confounded by patients' previous use of oral corticosteroids.

To complete this I will need to use the internet and books for my research. I will again have the support of a tutor to guide me through and would be able to ask work colleagues for help. This may then provide me the opportunity for a promotion at work because as a level 3 I could be a room leader. Foundation degree in early years To be able to study for a foundation degree in early years with The Open University you need to work in a registered early years setting and you must be over the age of 18. You need the agreement and support of your employer before registering. You must also be able to work with groups of 3 or more children on a regular basis. This degree helps build knowledge on children’s development and learning. It also teaches practical skills like planning, assessment and teamwork. To complete this degree I would use the internet for research. I could also use books e.g. Early Years levels 4 & 5 and the foundation degree by Francisca Veale. Progress to a management position in a business To progress to a management position I would need my level 2 and 3 certificates in children and young people’s workforce. It would also be beneficial to have a foundation degree in early years to show that I have a good understanding and knowledge of the early years. The most famous genusand the one that gave this family of dinosaurs its nameis Therizinosaurus, which was discovered in Mongolia a few years after World War II. In the absence of other remains, which were only discovered years later, the joint Soviet/Mongolian excavation team that unearthed the partial fossil of this dinosaur barely knew what to make of its three-foot-long claws, wondering if theyd stumbled on some kind of ancient killer turtle! (Some earlier texts reference therizinosaurs as segnosaurs, after the equally mysterious genus Segnosaurus, but this is no longer the case.) Therizinosaur Evolution Part of what makes therizinosaurs so baffling to scientists is that they cant comfortably be assigned to any existing dinosaur family, although theropods are certainly the closest fit. To judge by some clear anatomical similarities, it was once thought that these dinosaurs were closely related to prosauropods, the sometimes bipedal, sometimes quadrupedal herbivores that were distantly ancestral to the sauropods of the late Jurassic period. That all changed with the discovery of the middle Cretaceous Alxasaurus, a primitive therizinosaur equipped with some distinctly theropod-like characteristics, which helped put the evolutionary relationships of the entire breed in sharper focus. The consensus now is that therizinosaurs evolved in their unusual direction from an earlier, more primitive branch of the theropod family. From a biologists perspective, the oddest thing about therizinosaurs wasnt their appearance, but their diet. Theres a convincing case to be made that these dinosaurs a) used their long front claws to slice and dice copious amounts of vegetation (since these appendanges were too ungainly to slash fellow dinosaurs), and b) harbored an extensive network of intestines in their prominent pot bellies, an adaptation that would only have been needed in order to digest tough plant matter. The inescapable conclusion is that therizinosaurs (distant relatives of the prototypically carnivorous Tyrannosaurus Rex) were largely herbivorous, in much the same way that prosauropods (distant relatives of the protopically plant-eating Brachiosaurus) probably supplemented their diets with meat. A stunning recent discovery in Mongolia, in 2011, has shed some much-needed light on the social behavior of therizinosaurs. An expedition to the Gobi Desert identified the remains of no less than 75 therizinosaur eggs (genus undetermined), in 17 separate clutches of a few eggs apiece, some of which had apparently hatched before being fossilized. What this means is that the therizinosaurs of central Asia were social, herding animals, and may have provided their hatchlings with at least a couple of years of parental care before abandoning them in the wild.

Rolling admission is an application option that allows you to apply within a window of time. This window usually opens up in the fall, commonly September 1, and lasts through the spring, or until all spots in the upcoming class have been filled. This option differs from regular decision, early action, and early decision, whichall have set deadlines and are unlikely to accept a late application. If, however, these schools aren't on your college list, they could be a good fallback option should your other schools not work out. Treat schools with rolling admissions as if they have a fall or winter deadline, but keep in mind there are some that will accept late applications if you need to send one off last minute. When Should You Apply Under Rolling Admission? Because rolling admissions is done on a first come, first served basis, it's a good idea to get your application in as early as you can.Not only will submitting early ensure available space, but it will also demonstrate your enthusiasm for the school to the admissions committee. If you're really hoping to get in (which presumably you are for any school on your college list), then you should apply at least within the first half of the application window. Submitting by January should be a safe bet, but earlier in the fall could be even better if you're ready. Besides the motivation of finding out early and expressing your excitement about the school, you might also apply early in the window of time to meet a priority deadline.Eastern Michigan, for example, has a financial aid priority deadline of January 15 for incoming freshmen, though you can apply any time for admission up until July 1 for the fall semester. So much for rolling admission not having a deadline. If you really want to get in and your school has a priority deadline, you should take all necessary steps to meet it. Even if there's no priority deadline, you should set onefor yourself. Otherwise, it could be all too easy to keep putting it off. Not only could applying late in your senior year hurt your chances of admission, but you could also end up forgetting to complete certain key requirements. Don't be fooled by the lack of a deadline! There are still plenty of pieces to your application that require months of planning and preparation. The ones that especially call for forethought are your SAT/ACT, recommendation letters, and personal essay. If your school has a priority deadline in November, then your last chance to take the ACT or SAT would be in September or October of your senior year. Ideally, you'd have your test scores all set by the end of your junior year. This means you could take the test in the fall of junior year and again in the spring or summer before senior year, or even start as early as sophomore year for extra opportunities to test. While your school might have rolling admission, you'll still be prepping your application in your junior or even sophomore year. Another piece of your application that can't be left last minute is your letters of recommendation. Try to ask your teachers and counselor at least a month before you apply. You might also ask at the end of your junior year. Besides making the request, you also want to spend some time filling out a detailed "brag sheet" and reflecting on what would go into your ideal reccomendation letter. Finally, you could work on your personal essay over the summer. Just taking the time to mull over topics for a few weeks is a key part of the writing process. Even if it doesn't feel as if you're getting anywhere, your subconscious is turning over some good ideas! After, you'll want to spend time drafting, revising, and getting feedback from others. Some students end up changing their topics, so you want to have time to switch tracks in case you're struck with new inspiration. The application itself also takes time, as well as requesting documents from your school, such asyour official transcript.
